We made it to Canyonlands on Saturday night and camped out on Lockhart Basin Road.  The next morning we went up to a place I’ve been before, which I’ve dubbed ‘Mushroom Rock’.  It was windy, but the views are awesome up there.  You can see Junction Butte and Island in the Sky in the background.  We planted a geocache and then headed for the Needles.

Our first campsite was in Elephant Canyon (EC2).  The sky was hazy because of all of the wind, which didn’t fair well with my photograph taking.  I still managed to get some great shots and an awesome time-lapse during the night.   We woke up to sleet and snow falling on us, but it stopped after about 30 minutes.  We packed up our gear and headed for our next campsite in Devil’s Pocket.

Our third night was in the Devil’s Pocket.  We setup camp and then day hiked for about 6 hours through Chessler Park and Devil’s Kitchen.  The haze was gone and the temperature was 70 degrees.  We only saw one person the entire day.  We made some dinner when we got back to camp and then enjoyed the view up above.

On our way to Dalhart, we swung by and saw Gran in Colorado City.  We found some sweet trucker hats from the 70s when our great grandparents owned Snead’s Premier in Ranger, Texas.  Gran was happy we found them and let us have them.

We got to Dalhart around 8:30 and hung out with Dusty and his wife Rebecca. They live on a neat historic street in downtown Dalhart. We visited, drank some beer, and Dusty cooked up a great steak dinner. I slept like a log on a soft bed and took a hot shower this morning. Two things I will not have for the next 10 days! Time to get back on the road..

This was our campsite in 2004, about 5 miles up Lockhart Basin Road from Scenic Hwy 211.  It’s just east of Canyonlands National Park.  You can see North and South Sixshooter Peaks with the Abajo mountains off to the left.  We’re going to camp somewhere around here on Saturday night before we head into the Needles. I can’t wait to get back..

My brother and I are about to make an ‘epic’ 10-day Canyonlands adventure in southeast Utah.  We’re headed out Friday and should get there sometime Saturday evening.  We’re going to start in the Needles and work our way around to Island in the Sky, Horseshoe Canyon and then maybe take a peek at The Maze.  The Jeep is ready and as you can see, I’m about all packed up.  I’m sorry Cherokee buddy, but you can’t go..

I made camp earlier in the day because it was getting into the 40′s fast. The north wind was coming strong off the Chisos, so I angled my bivy to face south. It rained a little bit on me over the night, but it was so windy that I could hardly feel the drops. Believe it or not, I slept great. Of course the 10 mile hike that day and ear plugs helped with that!

This was taken the first day of my solo Outer Mountain Loop hike. I love the way the clouds are slowly creeping their way into the basin. The temperature that morning was a brisk 40 degrees, but it warmed up as I broke out of the clouds.
